I recently went for a short holiday to Ireland. I've wanted to go back for a long time. The previous times I was there, it was for whistlestop tours for work and I really didn't get to appreciate it properly. I now have some photos to remember it by.

I have recently been redesigning the Voice Services Intranet for Capgemini. The imagery on the site was not especially consistent, but they did have one attractive line drawing of a document. I have released a new clock today; Diner Clock. This clock is based on one I spotted while tucking into my Eggs Benedict in a diner recently. The clock had been very poorly treated and was a little worse for wear, so I have restored it to its former glory for this Flash version. New Photography. I've been out and about with my camera recently and have added a few images to my photography gallery.

I bought a wooden flip clock just recently, and decided to build my own flip clock mechanism in Flash. It looked fairly simple. How difficult could it be? This is one of the most challenging flash clocks that I have ever built! I have started this clock from scratch four times. I kept running into problems. The clock would flip correctly then a second later pop back to one minute ago. Midnight was showing as 24:60 at one point. On my fourth attempt I finally got the mechanism to work without any glitches. After all that effort, I'm stunned that the final clock weighs in at under 6kB. As far as I can tell from my searches, this clock is fairly unique on the Internet. There is a similar Dashboard Widget for Apple's OS X. But mine works on all platforms that run Flash, and theirs is 300kB!

I've been busy on other projects and commissions recently, so it's been difficult to add work to my site. But I had a little time not too long ago and did an interpretation of one of my favourite comic illustrations. This Piece was inspired by one of Dave McKean's illustrations for the Arkham Asylum, Batman comic. I looked at the original once, before I started work, and then again when I had finished. I think my image keeps the drama of the original painting, but brings it closer to a real-world representation. The pillars were modelled in Wings3D and rendered in Bryce. The final image is a composite of abut ten different Bryce renders, and a heck of a lot of Photoshop fiddling. I have also uploaded this photo, which was a birthday joke for my mother. Often I send birthday cards late because my memory is awful. This time I sent my mother's card late on purpose, just so I could use this joke. I think I got the coffee glass from Ikea! I will be adding a couple of new clocks soon, and in about two months I will be implementing a brand new site design. Watch this space!

I forgot to post it on completion. It was the result of my attempting to articulate the figure I used in my 'Stand Together' wallpaper. The figure was originally created in Wings 3D and smoothed and rendered in Cinema 4D, while the sky and water drops on the floor were created in Bryce 5.

It has been far too long since I have paid any attention to my photography section. I have removed the previous pages and replaced them with a new page of images which have 'till recently been gathering dust on a shelf. I will be adding more images once I have completed my review of the 40 Photo CDs I have stacked up beside my desk.

This image of a bamboo forest was inspired by the trailer from the movie 'House of Flying Daggers'. The foreground trees were modeled in Wings3D imported into Bryce and rendered in three different modes (colour, depth and mask). Compositing and special effects were applied in Photoshop to complete the image. Housekeeping. The logo for SEM was created with a mixture of Bryce 3D and Photoshop. The logo for iTEL was created completely Photoshop. The other logo is for the employment agency pinpoint121. They have given me permission to release this version publicly. The models were created in Wings3D, imported into and rendered in Bryce, and finished off in Photoshop. I will be working on articulating these models for Poser. If I succeed I will offer them for free download from this site. Watch this space.

New Section: Rainmeter Clocks I have added a new section to the portfolio area, Rainmeter Clocks. Rainmeter is a customisable performance meter, which can display the CPU load, memory utilization, disk space, network traffic, time and many more system stats. It also acts as a very useful analogue desktop clock. I have designed two brand new clocks, and I am in the process of converting my Flash clocks to Rainmeter. Two New Clocks. The two new clocks I have designed are available as Rainmeter Clocks and Flash clocks. I will continue to keep both projects running alongside each other. I have also addressed the layer problems that IE users were experiencing, and generally cleaned up a lot of code on the site.

I've not had the chance to work on anything for a while. Here is a quick experiment I did a couple of days ago. I thought I'd have a go at medical representation. The image depicts red blood cells rushing through an artery. The image was composed with a mixture of Bryce and Photoshop. The blood cell was modeled in Winds3D. I set up a scene in Bryce with a number of duplicates over a modified terrain. Finally the image was brought into photoshop where I added the distance and motion effects and other final tweaking. I'm fairly pleased with the result. I was aiming for an image with more dynamism than the standard cover-slide images you usually see.

You'll be getting bored of these soon. I have added another new Flash Clock to my collection. Amber Eye brings my total to 22 clocks. New Wallpapers. I have added two wallpapers to the portfolio section. One is in a style that will be familiar to regular visitors. Wibble! is a fun wallpaper that matches the style of Eau? Robot and Walrus. Mars was originally intended to be part of a suite of 9 wallpapers representing the planets of the Solar system (There are debates about whether Pluto is a planet or not, but this isn't the place for that). I'm not sure if the wallpaper works or not, so I'm posting it here to gauge reaction. I may continue with this suite in the future. New Image in the Digital Media Section. The last of today's updates is a chocolate bar wrapper. This was made for a friend to give as gifts to wedding guests.

New Bryce 3D Models .I have added two new models to the Bryce 3D section of the site. One is a padlock. This was a modeling exercise for me, to see how close I could get to a real world object. The other is a Flash Gordon style rocket ship for your mini space epics. I have removed my tin robot from sale on renderosity.com. I am now offering it for free, download here. Well, I'm exhausted. The wallpaper was rendered in Bryce as usual and I cleaned up a few of the errors in the mesh with Photoshop. Robot features a robot I built in Wings3D, Based on a wind-up tin toy.
Snowmen (Jelly Babies)

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I was secretly whisked up to Aviemore in Scotland by my girlfriend - Diana. For a while I'd been telling her that it had been about twenty years since I last built a snowman. So there we were halfway up the Cairngorm Mountains, making a big pile of snow when the idea of making a snow 'jelly baby' occurred to me.

Nothing to do with illicit hooch you understand. Just a soothing image of the moon over a lake.

Update:

Been away for a while. Three weeks in Florida feels good (apart from the sunburn). Swam with squids & chased dolphins. Had great omelettes at 'The Waffle House'. Anyway, that's why there have been no changes recently. I have added a new tutorial yesterday (brushed steel). And the others are coming along nicely. I'm pretty new at writing tutorials, and if anyone has any suggestions to make them easier to follow please let me know. I'm probably assuming everyone does things the same way as me (I know that's not true). Netscape's still a pig. Please use IE5.0+. Anyway just keeping you up to date.

Update:

Three tutorials uploaded (yay!): Eyeball, Wood & Stone. More on the way. I'm still having problems with Netscape. The problem is in the differing Document Object Models (DOM) between the browsers. They both speak JavaScript, just not the same dialect. I may consider a separate site for Netscape with less functionality. MSIE just allows me to make prettier pages. I've just downloaded the NS6 patch for Dreamweaver but it doesn't really help much, Netscape is a pig. If anyone any has ideas about the NS problem have a look at my code & help if you can. Thanks.

Well here it is: Version three of adamdorman.com

This is an early beta release. Not all the features are implemented at present. The tutorials section is at at the moment empty. I'm hoping in the New Year to change my host to a PHP service. It's something I'm having to learn at work and think it might come in useful here. What I do have is a portfolio. Digital, Natural & Photographic media are all represented. I'm particularly proud of my custom JavaScript functions to show the previews. Hopefully they will seem nothing out of the ordinary and perfectly useable. If so I've succeeded. A note about Netscape: At present I'm having difficulty getting my javascript to work in Netscape. I am working to resolve these problems, but at present it is not my top priority. Please be patient in the meantime. A note about 800x600 browsers: I have tried to make this site work in the most common browser sizes. However in some of the portfolio sections you may not see a full description. The solution is to browse in full-screen mode. Well that's about it for now. If you have any comments, suggestions or complaints please don't hesitate to email me.
